Tummy Tuck Reduces Appetite?

By Dr. James White

For years, tummy tuck surgery has been regarded as an effective way to tighten loose, excess skin of the stomach. However, preliminary research suggests it may also serve as a weight loss tool, possibly altering the hormones responsible for appetite in previously overweight patients.

According to a trial study released in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, females with a preoperative BMI of 24.5 or greater were successful in sustaining weight-loss for an entire year following abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) surgery. In fact, the patients, on average, lost 4.5 percent of their initial BMI within the year following their abdominoplasty .

During the course of the study, the weight of 20 female participants was observed before and one year following tummy tuck surgery. After one year, 14 of the 20 tummy tuck patients continued to lose weight beyond that which was surgically removed during the tummy tuck procedure. On average, 5lbs of excess skin and fatty tissue was removed during the abdominoplasty surgery.

Interestingly enough, three-fourths of the participants reported greater levels of satiety following their procedure. However, the findings established that, ultimately, tummy tuck surgery only altered the long-term weight of those patients with a preoperative BMI of 24.5 or greater (just below what is considered “over weight”).

“Whether or not long-term weight reduction is associated with abdominoplasty has been little investigated and remained controversial. We hypothesize that the increased satiety seen in our patients is related to changes in the neuroendocrine system, ” explains Dr. Moulton-Barrett and colleagues.

While we offer tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) surgery at our practice, we do not yet have enough evidence to claim weight loss as a potential benefit of the surgery. However, the procedure is proven to be effective in tightening deflated skin and creating a more appealing body contour.

At our practice, patients with a BMI of 30 or greater will be advised to begin a diet and exercise program before undergoing tummy tuck surgery. For a dramatic effect, patients often elect to combine this procedure with breast augmentation or liposuction. This is what surgeons often refer to as a “mommy makeover”.

The cost of tummy tuck surgery in our Chattanooga practice starts around $6,000. To make cosmetic surgery more financially feasible for our patients, we offer CareCredit financing.
