Tummy Tuck vs. Liposuction

By Dr. James White

In an effort to combat unflattering waistlines which persist despite weight loss, new mommies, or patients who have recently lost a significant amount of weight ,often book liposuction consultations at our practice only to be informed that what they really need is tummy tuck surgery.

While liposuction is helpful for removing lipid (fat) deposits in trouble areas after diet and exercise prove unsuccessful, liposculpture cannot address lax skin and stretched abdominal wall muscles. In fact, liposuction can make the condition worse by further loosening the skin . Most patients ,post massive weight loss or pregnancy, will require body contouring with excision of loose skin as liposuction is only designed to address trouble, fatty deposits resistant to diet and exercise.

Sucessful Tummy Tuck Surgery

Also known as abdominoplasty, tummy tuck surgery has been highly effective in retracting the stomach’s “outward” appearance often exhibited in patients who have experienced significant weight gain followed by loss . As a result, many of The Biggest Loser contestants have expressed their advocacy. A wonderful display of abdominoplasty success is exemplified in former Biggest Loser contestant Danny Cahill who lost an incredible 239 pounds. Unfortunately, Danny’s hard work was overshadowed by loose, sagging skin. After the droopy skin covering his abdominals were removed during abdominioplasty , he was finally able to display his amazing results with confidence.

A tummy tuck is a very common procedure that takes around three hours to complete. The incision is placed on the lower abdominals. Once the incision is made, excess fat and skin are removed. Then, abdominal ligaments are firmed and tightened. Most patients require 1 to 3 weeks of recovery before resuming normal activities.

If you have stretched your abdominals or skin covering them beyond non-surgical repair, you may be a candidate for tummy tuck surgery. Candidates must be in good health and non-smokers.
