Throughout history, distinctive body shapes have been regarded as fashionable or desirable. With passing decades, body type trends have evolved. Depending on the era you live in, you may be lucky enough to naturally posses the figure coveted by mainstream society at any give time.

Back in the 1950’s, Jayne Mansfield and Marilyn Monroe made voluptuous, hourglass figures in vogue. Then, supermodel Twiggy hit the fashion scene in the 1960’s and completely altered beauty standards. As a result, it seemed for decades that thinner more waifish figures (in varying degrees) were considered to be the “ideal body type”. Shift to our current day in age and it appears curves have made a comeback with stars like Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, Beyonce and Kate Upton reminding society of just how beautiful and feminine curves can be.

With curves trending in the main stream, it seems many female patients are seeking ways to attain more voluptuous breasts, plumper backsides and smaller waists (to emphasize an hourglass silhouette). While women with “boyish” physiques may not have been so lucky during the Maryiln Monroe era, aesthetic technology has come a long way. If you were not born with curves, modern-day technology allows patients to purchase them. Here are some of the cosmetic procedures intended to enhance curves.

Breast Augmentation-

Considered the most popular procedure in the field of cosmetic surgery, a breast augmentation can enhance the size and shape of one’s chest/breast. The procedure only takes 1-2 hours to complete and starts around $3800 depending on the type of implant used. Breast enlargement is one of the most common ways to provide a women with instant curves. The procedure is tried and true but breast implant preferences have definitely changed with the times. In the 1990’s, the trend was to go for a larger, more augmented look. Now, there is a movement towards more natural looking implants. Patients tend to go with a smaller sized shaped implant compared to those patients of the Pamela Anderson era.

Butt Enhancement-

Made popular by celebrities like Kim Kardashian, bigger bottoms seem to be all of the rage. While there are non-surgical ways to boost and build the glutes( like lunges and squats) surgical butt enhancement seems to be one of the fastest growing trends in cosmetic surgery. Surgical butt enhancement can be achieved by different approaches. Whether by fat transplants, gluteal implants or a surgical lift , the American Society of Plastic Surgeons projects that 13,373 Americans elected to augment their bottoms in 2013. Unlike breast augmentation which has been around for years, butt enhancement is a relatively new concept. Gluteal enlargement is regarded by many as the new frontier of cosmetic surgery. While exciting, there are still some uncertainties and reservations as they relate to the dependability and functionality of butt implants. Postoperative recovery requires patients to stay off of their glutes for weeks. This is impractical for many with jobs that require seated positions. Moreover, gluteal implants have a reputation for not staying in place. Unlike breast implants which can be placed under the muscle and contained by the overlying muscle, butt implants are sometime placed on top of the gluteal muscles.

Liposuction-

Coveting that feminine hourglass silhouette? Abdominal/flank liposuction can help cinch and sculpt a smaller waist line…allowing womanly hips to pop. Liposuction of the abdomen can start around $2500 and recovery time is typically one to two weeks. Liposuction candidates must have a BMI of 31 or less and posses good skin quality. While liposuction is not a weight loss tool, it can be effective for spot reduction of fat deposits when diet and exercise alone fail to produce results.

While big bottoms are trendy now, keep in mind that, unfortunately, most trends go out of style. You should never undergo something as serious as cosmetic surgery to keep up with the trends. Your decision to complete surgery should only come after serious thought and consideration. Let’s face it: most of us would love to lose some “lbs.”. Yet, unfortunately, many of us are unsuccessful in our attempts to slim down. As a result, we learn to dress in a way which conceals our trouble areas and accentuates our leaner features. What if, however, one of the your trouble areas exists in the facial region (think..double chin, chubby cheeks)? You can’t exactly compress your chipmunk cheeks with a pair of Spanx. Fear not. The field of aesthetics has you covered. Below are three ways to slim and sculpt your face.

1. Buccal Fat Removal
Everyone is born with fatty tissue in the lower facial region known as buccal pads. These buccal pads provide a youthful, “baby face” effect. For some, however, they create a “chipmunk” or “chubby” cheeked appearance. This is adorable on children and many will grow out of this phase . For those who do not, self-esteem issues can develop. As a result, many individuals will feel they look overweight or unattractive. Buccal fat pad removal is a procedure that involves removing the oversized fat pads to achieve a more chiseled look to the cheek, essentially hollowing the area. While this can provide great contouring to qualified candidates, this can also “age” some. This is why it is important to discuss your concerns with an experienced surgeon. Buccal Fat removal is completed with very small incisions inside the mouth with minimal scarring.

2. Facial Liposuction
The double-chin is a common complaint for many. Even those who are physically fit struggle with this stubborn, fat deposit. Unfortunately, you cannot spot reduce the double-chin with exercise or diet. You can , however, with liposuction. Liposuction surgery can be performed to remove fatty deposits under the chin and on the jawline. It is a relatively simple and straightforward procedure that only takes 30 minutes to an hour to perform. Upon recover, which typically lasts a few days, swelling will be present. It is crucial to wear a compression garment until the swelling subsides. Laser addition to standard liposuction can result in skin tightening at the site.

3. Chin Implant
A small, weak chin can often cause one’s face to appear round and undefined. A chin implant can alter facial structure and provide a more aesthetically pleasing shape. As an added bonus, it can reduce the appearance of a double-chin and cause the nose to appear smaller. While very subtle, chin augmentation can provide effective results. The procedure costs around $3000 and takes only an hour to perform. Unlike breast implants, chin implants are approved for lifetime use which means you never have to replace the device. We have had many pleased chin augmentation patients at our practice and the procedure is considered one of the fastest growing cosmetic surgeries to date. Many are deeming it “the new boob-job”. Chin implants are most commonly solid silicone, placed through a very small incision below the chin and can be completely reversed.

If you want to learn more about any of these slimming procedures, call 423-648-4011 and schedule a private consultation with one of our Board Certified Surgeons. Don’t let a case of “chipmunk cheeks” and “double chins” keep you from looking your best.

Thunder thighs, bat-wing arms and muffin-top plague many women in their quest to attain a sleek silhouette. As if a girl has enough to worry about, wearing a supportive bra often results in another undesirable effective….bra rolls.

Also known as “back fat”, bra rolls often appear in the upper back at the bra line and are a result of excess fatty tissue or lax skin which is often “magnified” when the pressure of a brassiere is applied. For many, this condition gets worse with age. Because of the location of the tissue, it is often a trouble area tricky to address with exercise alone. So, what is a girl to do? It definitely limits ones wardrobe.

Sure, you could wear looser, less supportive brassieres or ditch them altogether, but then you set yourself up for sagging breasts and poor posture. You could also amp up your fat burning efforts with stricter devotion to proper nutrition and fitness. The problem many women are finding, however, is that no matter how much weight they may shed, their body refuses to rid itself of fat in this area.

While many companies have recently developed compression garments specifically designed to eliminate “back fat” or “bra rolls” , such products have their limits. Some garments are simply ineffective while others are hard to conceal, especially in more revealing clothing.

Unfortunately, the only way to isolate or target specific trouble areas is through surgical intervention. The two main methods of bra-roll attack are liposuction or skin tightening and excision with an upper back lift. So, which procedure are you best suited for?

Bra Fat Liposuction

For younger patients with robust skin quality who simply wish to reduce the amount of fatty tissue at the bra line, liposuction is a less invasive option. Liposuction of bra fat rolls is very effective in reducing the appearance of bulging fatty tissue at the upper back. Even better, liposuction requires less recovery and surgical time and is more affordable than a bra-line backlift. It is important to note however, due to the fibrous characteristics of the upper back, this area can be more challenging to treat. This is why it is important to do your research before selecting a surgeon to complete this procedure. While liposuction is effective in removing fat volume, liposuction will not address lax, sagging skin. Some patients are surprised to learn that what they may really need is a back lift, not liposuction.

Bra- Line Back Lift

When a patient displays poor skin elasticity and significant skin laxity, liposuction is ineffective.  In fact, liposuction alone can make the area worse. For this type of patient, a bra-line back lift is best. In fact, many post-bariatric surgery patients are great candidates for this procedure as they have lost a significant amount of body fat yet struggle with loose skin where fat cells once resided.

During a bra-line back lift, an incision is made at the bra line on the back. Excess tissue is then removed and/or tightened into a lifted position. Upon healing, patients will most likely still display scarring at the incision site. Luckily, many patients are able to conceal their scar with their bra. This procedure typically takes 60 to 90 minutes to complete and starts around $6,000. Recovery typically takes one to three weeks.

During your consultation with our board certified surgeons, your treatment plan will be established whether it be simple back liposuction or a bra-line back lift. If you would like to banish the bra-roll, call 423-648-4011 and schedule your complimentary consultation!

breast reduction

Looking to go down a cup size? You may not need as invasive of an approach as breast reduction surgery to accomplish your goals. For patients who desire only a small decrease in breast volume, no lift…no drastic alteration in size.., liposuction can be a viable option.

Breast Reduction Surgery

While formal breast reduction surgery is a well-established procedure with a successful track record, it comes with a price: visible scarring, post-operative discomfort and increased surgical costs.

During a formal breast reduction surgery, multiple incisions must be made including one around the nipple, another vertically under the nipple plus or minus additional incisions.  If a large nipple lift is needed it may be necessary to complete a long anchor incision at the horizontal crease under the breast. Excess skin and breast tissue are then removed and re-contoured using a combination of liposuction and sharp dissection to lift the nipple and shape the breast.  Eventually, these incisions result in visible scarring.  While, in less severe cases, we can use a less invasive incision technique to reduce the appearance of scarring, breast reduction surgery is ultimately more intensive than a simple reduction by means of  liposuction.

Following breast reduction surgery, patients typically require 5 to 8 days of recovery. Although most patients are up and walking the day after surgery, strenuous activities should be avoided for six weeks.

For patients seeking a significant change in size and a re-contouring effect, breast reduction/lift surgery remains the best course of action.  Not only can it reduce breast size, it can also lift, firm and provide a more “perky” appearance to sagging breast. The cost of breast reduction surgery can range anywhere from $5,000 to $8,000.

Reduction with Liposuction

Another breast reducing option is breast reduction liposuction.  Although still a surgical procedure, is considered less invasive, less costly and results in minimal to no visible scarring.  While liposuction cannot drastically alter size, provide lift or a more pleasing contour, it can decrease breast volume by one cup size.   Skin reduced in size will often respond with some skin tightening.  For patients only wanting a small reduction, liposuction may be the more sensible option.

During liposuction, the breasts are treated with a tumescent solution intended to numb the area and control bleeding. The cannula, less than 3mm in size, is inserted through small 3mm incisions. VASER ultrasound can be used to dislodge fat from the surrounding breast gland tissues using sound waves.  The liposuction cannula then suctions the desired amount of fat tissue from the treated areas.

Following breast reduction with liposuction, patients will be required to wear a compression garment for 1 to 3 weeks. Depending on the patient’s occupation, many can return to work only a few days after surgery.  The cost of liposuction starts around $3000.

While patients desiring more extensive changes in breast size and contour may be better off with formal breast reduction surgery, patients only hoping to achieve slight alteration in size can bypass increased costs, scarring and recovery time by opting for reduction by liposuction.

liposuction in chattanoogaIn a perfect world, with the press of a button or pass of a wand, unwanted fat can be melted away, instantly revealing a slimmer, more confident you. While this almost sounds like the making of a science fiction film, this is what many non-surgical liposuction technologies are claiming.

As time passes and technology advances, the cosmetic surgery patient has an increasing number of non-surgical options. In fact, it is hard to imagine a world without Botox and injectable dermal fillers. However, recently, their appears to be a shift from anti-aging endeavors to a new frontier- body sculpting. It seems every month a new liposuction alternative emerges promising to deliver results parallel to traditional, tumescent liposuction but with less cost, downtime and risk. While many non-surgical treatments have proven to be effective, do these new, lipo-alternative treatments produce results which actually live up to their claims? Lets explore three important aspects of treatment satisfaction: cost, results and required downtime.

Cost
Because surgical costs can add up quickly, one major appeal to non-surgical alternatives are their affordability factor. Yet many of these liposuction alternatives can cost up to $500 a session and require as many as 8 sessions for optimal results, not to mention the additional, routine maintenance visits. While cost is dependent upon several factors, if you compare the total expense of both surgical and non-surgical procedures, non-surgical alternatives can ultimately cost just as much, if not more, than liposuction surgery. Even more, your results may not meet your expectations.

Results
Because many of these technologies are considerably new to the market, sufficient testing and data may not exist. This equates to a certain level of unpredictability and uncertainty as it pertains to producible results and safety . As a lipo-alternative patient, it is possible to spend just as much as you would on liposuction surgery, but not reap the benefits or results if your treatment proves ineffective.

Recovery and Downtime
The distinct advantage non-surgical liposuction presents is less required downtime, or no downtime, while the typical downtime for liposuction surgery is anywhere from one to three weeks. But one must ask..what good does diminished downtime do if the results simply aren’t evident?

While all of this new technology is exciting, it important to note that the only real proven method of instant fat cell removal is liposuction surgery. Therefore, if you are looking for an alternative to liposuction surgery, your best bet is to exhaust all diet and exercise efforts. Hopefully one day a proven and more affordable alternative to liposculpture surgery will find its way to the market. Until then, we will have to slave away in the gym or brave it out for surgery. Unfortunately the old saying seems to remain true- if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.

cosmetic surgery Chattanooga, TennesseeYou have been good all year…why not treat yourself to a long-term investment like cosmetic surgery for the holidays? Unlike designer handbags and shoes which eventually go out of style, looking fabulous and improved self-esteem never gets old. Plus, colder weather and more time off during the holidays allows for ideal recovery conditions. Here are some procedures we have found popular in our practice this time of year.

Face Lift and Laser Resurfacing

A Facelift is a surgical procedure used to lift sagging facial tissues to a higher more youthful position. Most facelift procedures address the SMAS [underlying fibrous tissues of the face/neck], the platysma [neck muscle] and the skin of the face/neck. Confirming what we have seen in our Cosmetic Surgery practice for years, a study published in the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery revealed that patients looked an average of 9 years younger than their actual age after receiving facial rejuvenation procedures like facelift surgery. More recently, it was proven through scientific research that more than five years after facelift surgery, three-fourths of patients still look younger than they did before surgery. For optimal results, many patients combine facelift surgery with laser skin resurfacing.

Laser resurfacing is a less-invasive yet effective way to correct sun damage exhibited by age spots, fine lines and wrinkles. Laser treatments use thermal technology to remove the damaged, superficial layers of skin to ultimately reveal more fresh and youthful skin.

While recovering from facial rejuvenation procedures like laser resurfacing and facelift surgery, patients are instructed to avoid sunlight exposure. The shorter days of winter make such post-op recommendations more ideal and feasible . After all, many patients will see minimal sunlight given it is dark during their daily commutes. Even more, between sunny vacations, boating and a plethora of outdoor activities, avoiding the summer sun is almost impossible for many thus making winter a practical choice for facial rejuvenation procedures.

Body Contouring through liposuction and breast augmentation

Liposuction removes excess fatty tissues to reveal a trimmer silhouette while breast augmentation, by surgical implantation, can provide feminine curves by providing shape and volume. Although sun exposure is not particularly an issue in regards to liposuction and breast enhancement recovery , patients are required to wear post-operative garments while healing. Wearing such garments in the hot summer months can be uncomfortable and difficult to conceal. Even more, patients may not feel comfortable baring their bodies in skimpier clothing until they have fully healed. Cold weather attire allows for easy concealment of compression garments and bandages.

An added benefit to undergoing cosmetic surgery during this time of year, is more ample recovery time. With extra time off from school or work, the holidays allow many patients extra downtime. Many cosmetic surgery procedures require a 1 to 2 week recovery period in which many patients do not feel comfortable being seen in public. To ensure recovery time without having to ask for additional time away from school or work, many individuals book their surgery over Christmas vacation.

If you have been seriously contemplating cosmetic surgery, you may want to consider scheduling your procedure within the next few months. As an added incentive, many cosmetic surgery practices offer holiday specials. Until January 31, 2013, we are offering a discounted rate on silicone breast implants. To schedule your complimentary consultation, call 423-648-4011.

liposuction in Chattanooga, TennesseeFor years , liposuction has been considered the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure in the United States and although it is a highly effective tool for fat tissue spot reduction, in fact one of the only proven methods for spot reduction , the general US population mistakes this body-sculpting tool for a diet and exercise alternative .This is actually a very popular misconception associated with liposuction in which we must consistently clarify in liposuction consultations.

The Ideal Liposuction Candidate

The best candidate for this procedure is someone with localized collections of fat which persist despite diet and exercise.

Those who are at or close to their ideal body weight derive the greatest benefit from this procedure. Typically, an individual with a body mass index (BMI) of 21 – 25 is ideal while an individual with a BMI of 26 – 30 is still a good candidate. Although, patients with a BMI above 30 (30 – 35) will benefit from liposuction, the result will not be as optimal as those of individuals closer to their ideal body weight. For people in this BMI range (30 – 35 ), a diet and exercise program is recommended prior to consideration for liposuction. This procedure is not well suited for individuals with a BMI of or greater than 35.

If you are not at your desired weight, we will recommend that you get down to your desired weight and stabilize your weight prior to undertaking this procedure rather than having it done and then trying to lose additional weight as the best results are obtained when you are at your desired weight. Moreover, your weight should be stable for three months prior to undertaking liposuction (a weight which is relatively constant over this period of time should be permanently sustainable). You should not be attempting active weight loss for at least one month prior to this or any other operative procedure.

Effective Spot Reduction with Liposuction

Liposuction is one of the only ways to target the areas where we tend to deposit stubborn fat . The most typical trouble spots include the abdomen, love handles, outer thighs (saddle bags) and the double chin . The arms, back (below the bra line) and inner thighs are also common culprits of stubborn fat . Even after vigorous exercise and diet, these trouble areas tend to persist. So, why does this happen?

When you gain weight you grow adipocytes (fat cells) that fill with lipid (fat) and when you lose weight, those fat cells empty out the lipid but stay in place. Therefore, they remain to simply fill again making you gain weight. This is one of the reasons why it is easy to gain weight and why repeated gaining and losing weight with dieting makes it harder to stay trim in the long run. You fill up with fat cells.

Unlike dieting, liposuction removes those fat cells permanently in addition to the lipid. It puts that area of your body back in sync with the rest of you so that even if you gain weight again, it will be more evenly distributed because the excess cells in your trouble area are gone for good. In fact, a number of patients have had liposuction and have subsequently gained weight. The areas originally treated by liposuction have maintained their new shape, and even though they are heavier they still have a more desirable silhouette.

The cosmetic success of liposuction relies on removing inches rather than pounds. For example, removing an amount of fat equivalent to a half-pound of butter from a woman’s saddlebag area or from a man’s love handle areas would result in dramatic change in silhouette, but would not significantly change the person’s weight. If at least a 50% improvement would make you happy, then it is likely that you will be very happy with the result of this procedure since our patients generally achieve more than a 50% improvement. For the perfectionist, or for liposuction of a very large area, maximum improvement may require a second procedure for which there would be an additional fee.

Year after year, cosmetic surgery continues to grow in popularity among Americans. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the number of cosmetic surgery patients in the US has increased over 197 percent since 1997. Below is a list of some of the most demanded cosmetic procedures last year. We offer all of these procedures in our AAAHC- accredited, surgical facilities.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

A breast lift, also known as a Mastopexy, is a surgical procedure intended to position “sagging” breasts higher on the chest. It is a very popular procedure among mothers who have experienced undesirable changes in their breasts after weight fluctuation and breast feeding.

A breast lift is typically a two hour procedure in which an incision is made around the nipple, vertically under the nipple and in the horizontal crease of the breast. Then, the breast tissue is reshaped and excess skin is removed. Before the incisions are closed with sutures, the nipple and areola are repositioned. Following this procedure, scarring at the incision will be present. However, scarring should significantly fade after laser treatment, which we include in the patient’s procedure costs. Scarring also fades with time.

Breast Augmentation with Implants

For added fullness and volume, many patients elect to combine a Mastopexy with breast implants. This provides optimal results for patients who have experienced both volume loss and dropping of lax skin. Breast implants are ideal for increasing the size of the breast, balancing size asymmetry or restoring post-pregnancy volume loss. This outpatient procedure takes only one to two hours to complete. Once an incision is made, a saline or silicone implant is inserted. The incision can be made under the breast, around the nipple, in the armpit or in the belly button.

Cosmetic Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty)

Cosmetic eyelid lift surgery is effective in correcting droopy, hooded or puffy eyelids. This procedure continues to gain popularity because the eyes are such a prominent facial feature. Tired or droopy eyes can add years to one’s perceived age. Luckily, Blepharoplasty surgery has been proven to erase years from one’s face.

During an eyelid lift, fat, excess skin and muscle are removed from the upper and lower eyelids. The procedure eliminates the eye’s droopy and puffy appearance and can improve the patient’s vision. In fact, insurance often covers the cost of Blepharoplasty surgery if the patient can prove loss of vision due to droopy eyelids. In many cases, patients combine eyelid lift surgery with brow and face lifts.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Considered one of the most popular procedure for mommies, a tummy tuck is especially effective for patients who have stretched the abdominal muscles and skin beyond non-surgical repair . During a tummy tuck, the abdominal area is tightened and the excess skin covering the abdominals is removed. Before undergoing this procedure, it is important for patients to accept that they will have a horizontal scar at the incision site in the pelvic region (which can often be concealed even in relatively revealing swimwear).

Liposuction

Liposuction is the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure in the United States. This procedure involves the removal of fat from deposits beneath the skin using a hollow stainless steel tube (called a cannula) with the assistance of a powerful vacuum. Liposuction should not be used as a “weight loss” tool but as a means to provide a better contour to those healthy individuals that exercise, eat healthy and have a BMI of 30 or below yet still have “fatty deposits” in trouble areas. Common areas treated by liposuction include upper and lower abdomen, the flanks (love handles), outer and inner thighs, inner knees, arms, “bra rolls”, and under the chin.

If you are interested in any of these procedures, call 423-648-4011 to schedule your private consultation.

If you have recently lost a significant amount of weight, congratulations! You are most likely experiencing many changes in your body. You probably feel better and can fit into smaller clothing, but may still be unsatisfied with your appearance. After all, weight fluctuation can cause irregular stretching in the skin or tissue that creates bulging and flab in certain areas of the body.

Men and women who experience a rapid deflation of their body due to fat loss typically have relatively poor skin quality. The skin has lost its elastic properties. This lack of elasticity is evident through stretch marks and cellulite (which are classic signs of permanent skin damage). These patients are NOT ideal candidates for liposuction since removing more fat from already damaged and deflated skin makes the sagging skin appear even worse.

For such cases, excisional cosmetic surgery techniques are ideal. The issue is skin and muscular laxity as opposed to excess fat cells. Unfortunately, liposuction is only effective in eliminating excess fatty tissue. However, our practice offers cosmetic surgery procedures that address saggy, deflated skin. Below are some of the most effective procedures for removing the excess skin.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons,a tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty) is the fifth most common cosmetic surgery procedure performed in the United States. Individuals interested in a tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty) seek to improve the appearance of a protruding abdomen after a lack of results from traditional methods such as weight loss through dieting and muscle strengthening. By removing excess skin in the mid to lower abdomen and tightening lax skin and muscles below the navel, a tummy tuck contours the body by redefining the abdominal area and promotes the appearance of a narrowed waist line.

Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)

If you are experiencing a case of “bat arms” or “wings”, an arm lift (Brachioplasty)could be the solution for you. An arm lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure that eliminates and tightens loose skin from the arm, giving you a more toned appearance. It is also a great way to combat the effects of gravity, aging and reduced skin elasticity.

Thigh Lift

Sometimes, liposuction alone can take care of unsightly thighs, but if extremely loose skin exists, a thigh lift may be the only solution. The most common type of thigh lift is a medial lift. A medial lift eliminates fatty tissue and tightens loose skin of the inner thigh. The incision is made at the inner crease of the leg and is closed by dis-solvable sutures. Some patients elect to combine this procedure with a butt lift. The combination of a thigh lift and butt lift is known as a spiral lift. A spiral lift is ideal for patients with loose skin on the inner thighs, sagging skin on the buttocks and a poorly defined gluteal crease.

All of these cosmetic “lifts” and “tucks” require downtime and will involve scarring. As with any surgery, certain risks are involved and can be discussed during your consult with your cosmetic surgeon or plastic surgeon.

Call 423-648-4011 to schedule your skin removal consult.

Cosmetic surgery is a sub-specialty that uniquely restricts itself to the enhancement of appearance through surgical and medical techniques. It is specifically concerned with maintaining normal appearance, restoring it, or enhancing it toward some aesthetic ideal for all areas of the body. Cosmetic surgery involves a multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach from a variety of disciplines including board-certified dermatologists, general surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, ophthalmologists, ENT’s, plastic surgeons and physicians from other fields. All of these disciplines have contributed to the vital growth of cosmetic surgery.

Choosing a surgeon for cosmetic procedures

Choosing a doctor for any healthcare need is an important decision. Patients should choose a healthcare provider based on his or her training, education, experience and demonstrated practice history. It is the American Medical Association’s policy that individual character, training, experience and judgment are the criteria for granting privileges for surgical procedures, and that physicians representing several specialties can and should be permitted to perform the same procedures if they meet criteria for the specific procedure.

With an expanding number of consumers anxious to undergo cosmetic surgery, it is imperative that consumers have access to accurate information, the freedom to choose among physicians and that the number of qualified providers is not artificially restricted. Unfortunately, the vast majority of consumers view cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery as one and the same. Consumers’ misapprehension in this regard has them relying on incomplete and false information when choosing a physician to perform cosmetic surgery procedures.

Plastic Surgery is not Cosmetic Surgery

When considering cosmetic surgery, people are almost universally unaware of the difference between cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery. For this reason, they are easily misled to believe that board certification in plastic surgery evidences a physician’s competence to perform cosmetic surgery. It does not.

A recent national cosmetic surgery training survey sent to the 89 active US plastic surgery programs in regard to resident preparedness in aesthetics was quite revealing. The information published in the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery revealed significant differences in opinions between program directors and finishing senior plastic surgery residents. Although 51 percent of residents felt prepared to integrate cosmetic surgery into their practices upon graduation, 36 percent felt further cosmetic training was desirable after completion of plastic surgery residency. Confidence levels were specifically low in rhinoplasty, face lifts, endoscopic procedures and body contouring techniques. Experience with skin resurfacing, facial fillers and botulinum toxin type A were listed as other areas of concern.

On a positive note, breast augmentation, breast reduction and abdominoplasty were most frequently performed by plastic surgery residents during training with the highest resident comfort levels. On the basis of these results, Dr. Colin Morrison, et al suggested changes in cosmetic surgery training during plastic surgery residency.

As there are very few dedicated Cosmetic Surgery Fellowships, cosmetic surgery is primarily learned during post residency through ongoing continuing education, training and experience. The most recent advances in cosmetic surgery have appeared in the last seven years- Botox, facial fillers, advanced laser skin resurfacing and body contouring. If your surgeon completed residency more than seven years ago and offers advanced cosmetic surgery procedures, he or she learned these techniques at post graduate training courses offered to physician and surgeons of all specialties.

Ultimately the decision is yours..so only can make the the right choice for your surgical procedures, whether elective for cosmetic reasons or for medical reasons. Choose well!
