Actual patient of Advanced Surgical Concepts shown before and 6 weeks after a mid face lift combined with a browlift, fat transfer, CO2 laser skin resurfacing and upper blepharoplasty.

In an attempt to combat signs of aging, it seems increasingly popular for patients at our practice to undergo face lift and eyelid lift surgery in one surgical session.

Most likely, the combination of eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) and mid face lift surgery has become so common because such procedures correct the areas of the face that tend to show signs of aging the most. By the time many reach their 40’s, one can observe sagging in the jowls and an excess of skin and fat on the eyelids. Some may even begin to notice drooping of the brow or wrinkling of the forehead. If this is the case, a brow or forehead lift can effectively correct this facial region when Botox is not enough and is also commonly performed in conjunction with face lift and eyelid lift surgery.

Many face lift and eyelid lift patients also like to combine laser skin resurfacing and fat transfer. Through years of experience at our practice, we have found this to be an amazingly effective combination which can erase years from one’s perceived age. In addition to providing optimal results, combining multiple procedures can minimize recovery time and prove more cost effective than having each procedure scheduled individually.

To determine which combination is suitable for you, schedule a complimentary consultation at 423-648-4011.

Patient shown before and after a brow lift in conjunction with eyelid lift surgery.

Tired of looking tired…Botox not getting the job done ? Think you need an eye lift? What you may really need is a brow lift. Cosmetic eyelid surgery is one of the most popular procedures performed worldwide for facial rejuvenation. However, many times people have upper eyelid skin removed when what they really needed was a brow and forehead lift.

The brow, forehead and eyelids are intimately related in both youth and aging. If you compare a photo in your 40’s or 50’s with one from your high school days, you will likely notice that your brow has dropped, your forehead has wrinkled and you have excess eyelid skin and fat.

A female’s brow should be arched on the lateral third and positioned above the orbital rim or upper orbital bone. A male’s brow should be positioned at the orbital bone or rim. As we age they tend to droop, more so on the lateral aspect. This can make you look tired, sad and even angry. This extra
skin is often referred to as lateral hooding and can even interfere with your vision. Some hooding may be so severe that visual fields are impaired resulting in medical necessity for repair. In other words, some brow lift and eyelid lifts can be covered by insurance providers.

Brow Lift Surgery

A brow lift repositions the upper facial skin back to where it belongs. This can be done through several different surgical approaches. Sometimes it is done through several small incisions behind the hairline. Other techniques remove excess skin through an incision hidden just behind the hairline. Once the brow has been repositioned, extra skin above the eye can then be addressed. Removal of extra eyelid skin is called a blepharoplasty, sometimes referred to as an upper eyelid tuck. This is not always necessary, depending on the amount of brow correction that is needed.

Not all patients want or need a brow lift. It is important in your consultation to have your physician show you the difference. By manually elevating the lateral brow you can simulate the effects of a brow lift. Most patients can tell immediately whether or not they like the look of a brow lift. Some will think it makes them look younger and refreshed, while others will think it makes them look surprised and unnatural. Brow lifting is only an option if the patient likes the look.

Once you have been evaluated, your surgeon can recommend a treatment plan that is individualized for your specific needs. Request to see before and after photographs of previous brow lift patients completed by your surgeon. Artistic detail is a must. Customize your expectations with your surgeon. Most brow, lid and forehead procedures can be completed in an office surgical suite with local and IV sedation. This may involve a brow and forehead lift, blepharoplasty or both.

Have you been looking for a way to rejuvenate or enhance your natural beauty? Perhaps you are seeking better results than those achieved through yet another “miracle cream” backed by outlandish claims, however, you are still not ready to commit to the cost and recovery time associated with cosmetic surgery. Whether you wish to smooth away fine lines and wrinkles, gently lift sagging brows or plump aged lips, many patients have found a happy medium with non-surgical alternatives offered at our cosmetic surgery practice. Here are a few of the most effective, non-invasive solutions.

Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing

While some laser treatments are highly invasive and require significant downtime, not all laser treatments are created equally. Fractional, non-ablative skin resurfacing is the only laser rejuvenation method which offers both excellent results and no downtime. Wrinkles, sun damage(pigmentation defects) and superficial scars are conditions treated by fractional methods.

Fractional skin treatments deliver laser light in an array of narrow, focused “microbeams” to create columns of heat within the skin. These “microbeams” penetrate deep into the dermis for the most effective, long-term results obtainable. The heated tissue within the columns starts a natural healing process that forms new, healthy tissue and, ultimately alters the collagen and elastin below your skin’s surface which gradually decrease the appearance of sunspots, fine lines, wrinkles and acne scarring. A series of treatments may be required to achieve the desired results.

Facial Fillers

Erase Marionette lines and Plump Lips

Hoping to erase lines or folds around your mouth?Perlane and Juvederm are dermal fillers composed of Hyaluronic acid which are often used for deeper facial lines such as the Nasolabial folds (lines from the nose to the lip sometimes called smile lines) and marionette lines near the corners of the mouth. They are also used to plump lips in a nonsurgical lip augmentation.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the human body. When we age, however, our hyaluronic acid (HA)supply depletes. This lack of HA can cause our tissues to appear deflated and wrinkled. Perlane and Juvederm injections restore lost hyaluronic acid to rejuvenate aged skin or plump lips. The effects of such fillers typically last 6 to 12 months.

For Youthful Cheeks

Unlike Juvederm and Perlane which are comprised of HA, Radiesse is an injectable filler made of tiny calcium-based microspheres which are suspended in a natural, water-based gel. These calcium based microspheres are similar to minerals that are found naturally in your body . Over time, your body absorbs these tiny microspheres and the gel and leaves behind only your own natural collagen. Radiesse is typically used to treat the cheek region of the face and lasts a year or more.

Under Eye Restoration

If you wish to restore youth under your eyes, Selphyl may be a good choice. Utilizing the platelets found in the patient’s own blood, Selphyl stimulates the body’s natural process of tissue regeneration and collagen production.

Neuromodulators: Lift Droopy Brows & Correct Frown Lines

Neuromodulators relax dynamic muscles that create wrinkles as they contract. Areas that can be treated with Botox include crow’s feet. frown lines, forehead lines, neck lines and chin dimpling. Botox can gently lift drooping brows, elongate the appearance of the chin or elevate the corners of the lips, enhancing the patient’s smile. A small amount injected in the lip border reduces the appearance of lip lines and can help the lips appear more plump.

Botox injection is the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedure today. Improvement of the wrinkles may last up to four to six months. Until recently, Botox was the only botulinum toxin A preparation with a cosmetic indication. Dysport, the first competitor with similar indications was approved in April 2009.

Regardless of the non-surgical procedure you wish to undergo, be sure to choose your provider wisely. Facial injection is an art form and you must choose your artist well. Review before and after photographs and make sure you have appropriate expectations for non-surgical facial enhancement before you present for facial review. Make sure that your aesthetic ideal matches that of your cosmetic surgeon injection artist.

Cosmetic Surgery Chattanooga, TennesseeFrom breast augmentation to facelift , if you have cosmetic surgery in an office-based setting you will certainly not be alone. Since 2005, an estimated 10 million procedures have been performed annually in office settings. Advances in medical technology have made it possible for cosmetic plastic surgeons to perform more advanced and complex surgical procedures in their offices. Whether it is a tummy tuck or a brow lift, every surgical procedure performed in a cosmetic surgeon’s office involves some form of analgesia or anesthesia to make the surgery painless. Some office-based procedures might even involve general anesthesia that provides total loss of consciousness.

Benefits of office-based cosmetic surgery

Since most patients want to avoid an overnight hospital stay after surgery and reduce costs, ambulatory surgical procedures have become very popular. More recently, though, there has been a growing trend for cosmetic surgery to be done right in the cosmetic practice’s office. Office-based surgery can offer the convenience of having a procedure done in a more private, comfortable setting and a quick return home with significant reduction in cost without compromising safety.

The same anesthetic techniques used in hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers are used in office-based surgery. Patients undergoing office-based procedures will be asked to follow precautions similar to those in a hospital. From the simple removal of a mole to facelift, liposuction, varicose vein laser or tummy tucks, a rapidly growing number of cosmetic procedures are being performed in the surgeon’s office rather than in hospitals or surgical centers.

Questions to ask before undergoing cosmetic surgery in an office setting

In considering your options when surgery is advised, here are some questions you should ask before undergoing surgery in an office setting:

Who will be providing my anesthesia , and has this person been trained to give anesthesia?

Ideally, anesthesia should be delivered or supervised by an anesthesiologist or Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist medically trained to evaluate your health needs and decide whether you are a good candidate for surgery in an office setting. At a minimum, a person extensively trained in the delivery of anesthesia should be involved. Anesthesia needs are determined by your medical condition as well as by the type of operation you will have. Your cosmetic or plastic surgeon will discuss your anesthetic care with you before the surgery. Blood pressure, pulse rate, EKG and oxygen levels are some of the important vital signs that should be monitored during your surgery. You should have a qualified individual monitoring your vital signs in addition to the surgeon.

A surgeon’s office [like a hospital] should have the necessary emergency drugs, equipment and procedures in place to care for you in the rare event of a life-threatening complication. In rare instances, serious complications may require that you are transferred to a local hospital. Many states require licensing or accreditation by a recognized agency. These agencies regularly inspect such offices to ensure that the minimum standards of the patient are met. The State of Tennessee does not require licensing or accreditation; but requires surgical suite review prior to complex, Level III surgeries.

Surgical Suite Accreditation

Centers of excellence usually request voluntary accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care [AAAHC ] or the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities, Inc [AAASF]. Today, about one out of 10 surgeries are performed in a doctor’s office. Ask your cosmetic plastic surgeon if his or her surgical suite has been accredited.

Although our surgeons have hospital permissions, we perform the majority of our procedures in our AAAHC accredited , office-based surgical suites.

Zytaze Chattanooga, Tennessee
If you are like many of our Botox patients, you probably love the results associated with the botulinum toxin treatment but wish the effects lasted longer than a mere three months. Luckily, there is a new, nutritional supplement ,known as ZYTAZE®, which is intended to improve the effects of Botox and extend the duration of its results.

How Does ZYTAZE® work?

Botulinum toxins like Botox work by reducing the muscle activity responsible for fine lines and wrinkles like those present when we frown. In order for these toxins to be effective, however, each toxin molecule must bind with a zinc molecule. Without the presence of zinc, the otherwise powerful botulinum toxins are ineffective. Unfortunately, during the manufacturing process, the application of zinc molecules to the botulinum toxin solution are not feasible as this would decrease the potency of the solution. Therefore, the botulinum toxins must bind to zinc molecules found in human tissue during injection. Ultimately, if the patient is deficient in zinc, the effectiveness of the botulinum toxin injection will have only a moderate to small effect.

ZYTAZE® provides the zinc molecules necessary to optimize the effects of Botox. So, why not simply take an over-the-counter zinc supplement? Unfortunately, not all zinc is created equally. As a matter of fact, taking a low quality, hard to absorb form of zinc can compromise the absorption of higher quality zinc found in whole foods. This can actually be worse than taking no zinc at all. Formulated with a unique patent-pending combination of organic zinc and phytase to maximize zinc absorption ,ZYTAZE® enhances the effectiveness of botulinum toxin injections.

Recommended Dosage and Price

It is recommended that patients take two capsules daily for four days prior to and on the day of receiving botulinum toxin injections(Botox). A pack of ZYTAZE®, which contains10 tablets, can cost anywhere from $60-$80 and is available in the US by prescription only.
